ABC's of 4th Grade
A. Assessments – Our school administers two formal assessments throughout the school year. These are the NWEA, which is given at least twice a year and the NDSA, which is given once a year.
B. Book Orders - Scholastic book orders will be sent home every month. Please take time to sit down and look through the brochure with your child. There are some books that are relatively inexpensive and your child will be elated that mom or dad has taken an interest in what they enjoy reading!
C. Conferences – Conferences are held each quarter. The first and second quarters are scheduled, at which time you will receive a memo with the date and time of your child’s conference. Please limit your time to 15 minutes. If you feel you need more time, we can schedule at another time. The third and fourth quarters are “call-in” conferences, only if you feel the need to visit with me.
D. Discipline – I do maintain discipline within our classroom. I expect that each child respect one other as well as me. If a student is disrupting the learning of others, he or she will be removed from the classroom with consequences.
E. Extra Credit – There is a limited amount of extra credit. Encourage your child to hand in their work on time, doing a good job the first time around. Giving out extra sheets of work for extra credit serves very little purpose.
E. Errors – Students will be, at times, asked to stay in from recess to correct their errors.
F. Field Trips – We may go on field trips. I will always notify you prior. If you choose for your child not to participate, simply write me a note and other arrangements will be made for your child. Please do not ask us to drop off your child at a certain location as this puts all others behind schedule.
G. Grading Scale – A copy of the grading scale is attached.
H. Homework - There will be homework! Each student will have a special homework folder to put their work into throughout the day. Be sure you see this folder every night and return the completed work in the folder the next day. Also, check their planners for any assignments, etc.
I. Incident Reports – Incident reports are filled out by the students involved in some type of unacceptable behavior. These are kept on file, and in some cases Ms. Libis or I will contact the parents of the students involved for further action.
J. Just – in – Case – Your child is not feeling well, or you are planning to go on vacation, they will receive their makeup work when they return to school.
K. Kindness – Kindness is contagious! Showing kindness in the classroom will provide our class with a great year of friendships. Please encourage your child to participate in kindness.
L. Learning- Learning is always taking place in our classroom. Please remember that missing school should be kept to a minimum and for emergency reasons.
M. Medical Forms - If your child needs to take medication during the school day, it is given at the office. Please fill out the form found in the handbook prior to sending medicine to school. Please do not send your child to school when they are sick. Keep them home where they can be well attended to, with lots of TLC. When in doubt, leave them out.
N. Newsletters – These are sent home monthly by our school, and at times, I will send home a classroom newsletter periodically as to events taking place in our classroom.
O. Outside for Recess – We are usually outside for every recess unless the weather is unfavorable. Please encourage your child to dress accordingly, as I believe even a few minutes of fresh air does the body good. If your child is too sick to go out for recess, please keep them home until they are well. A doctor’s note is needed to excuse them from recess.
P. Progress Reports – Mid-terms are sent out each quarter, as well as progress reports. You can keep track of your child’s grades by accessing Power School.
P. Planners – Planners are used daily in the classroom. We will keep track of all homework/important information here.
Q. Questions and Answers – Should you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress or any other concerns, please contact me at the school at 456-0016, or by email [email protected] If I am in class, please leave a voice message with your concern, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
R. Reading for Pleasure - Encourage this in your own child! Whether it is a newspaper, comic book, fiction or non-fiction, reading is a life-long skill. I will expect students to have pleasure reading with them in school.
S. Student Services – We do have a variety of available for students with individual needs. If recommended, please take advantage of the programs available to help your child succeed, as it may prevent them from struggling throughout their Jr. high- high school years.
T. Teacher-parent communication – Planners are sent home each day with what is happening in school. Should you need to ask a question, write a note, or simply say “hi”; this is a great tool for communication.
U. Understanding Interests and Needs – Perhaps the greatest challenge we share is identifying and understanding your child’s individual interests and needs. Every effort will be made to meet the individual needs of your child.
V. Volunteering – On occasion we may need volunteers. If you can help, please let me know and I will keep you in mind.
W. Water – Water is allowed in the classroom, however, it needs to be in a sealable container.
W. Written Work – As I spend a GREAT deal of time after school correcting papers, please know that if I cannot read your child’s work, I will not give them credit. Please encourage them to be neat in the work.
X. Exploring, Experimenting, and Experiencing – All of these things can be seen in the 4th grade!
Y. You and Your Child – You are your child’s most important teacher. Please stay positive and enjoy the changes and challenges they will experience.
Z. Zero Tolerance- In 4th grade and school wide, there is a zero tolerance policy for bullying!
